About

I have spent my career in Christian Higher Education, split evenly between teaching sociology and academic administration. From the earliest days, I’ve been struggling to define the unique character of what we do in the Christian University. What is clear is that smaller Christian universities get caught up in national discussions about higher education without careful consideration of the unique environment that a residential Christian liberal arts institution truly is.

I have served at Olivet Nazarene University (IL), Sterling College (KS), Warner Pacific College (OR), Point Loma Nazarene University (CA), and Spring Arbor University (MI).

I’m an avid follower of the Chronicle of Higher Education and Inside Higher Education, trying to figure out how national issues relate to Christian Higher Education. I am the author of A First Step Into a Much Large World: The Christian University and Beyond. My hope is that these students will help shift thinking about Christian Higher Ed in more progressive and relevant directions.

My wife Jeralynne and I have two grown children, both married. We are the grandparents of Rosa Pavolva Hawthorne.

    1. Yes, actually. He was found as an abandoned puppy at Earlham College the week of Hurricane Sandy. He was found by the acting chaplain whose office is in Elton Trueblood’s old house on campus, so they named the dog after him.
